Counting is a basic foundational math skill that every preschooler will learn. It is a very important math skill, since it sets the basics for number sense. Preschoolers will first learn counting to 10 before they can proceed onto their teen numbers. Ensuring good counting skills will help their addition and subtraction skills.

These wheels are bit different to the classic counting clip cards in the sense that they have more than one option, which means the learner will have to clip several options.

To prep:

I love count and clip cards. Simply print, laminate, and cut apart the wheels. Throw in some clothespin and you are ready. If you’d like to make these cards self-checking be sure to put a dot or a dot sticker behind the correct answers before laminating the pages. That way if the learner clips the options they will know whether they have chosen the correct answers or not. It also helps to promote a sense of independency with the learner, as they are able to do and check the work done by themselves.

Using the Halloween Counting Wheels Printable:

We choose to complete our activity with clothespins, but you could easily use one of the following materials to mark the correct spots as well:

  • Themed manipulative (use halloween erasers to make this themed printable fun)
  • Buttons
  • Beads
  • Pom poms
  • Beads
  • Rainbow bears
  • Translucent math tokens
  • Dry Erase Markers (if laminated)

Presenting the printable to your learner:

  • Make sure your learner is familiar with counting before introducing the counting wheels since these require a lot of counting. It would be better if the wheels could be used as a revision for counting rather than using these to practice counting with your learner..
  • Present 1 to 2 wheels at a time and slowly increase as your learner becomes more familiar with the printable.

  • Ask them to start with one part of the wheel and count the number of items in that section. If it matches the number in the center, then they will clip or cover that option with their manipulative.
  • Then they will work their way around the wheel, counting the different sides and clipping those that match.
  • Each wheel contains 4 options that match the center, while the other 4 do not match the number in the center.
  • If you would like to make these cards SELF-CHECKING refer to the prep section of this printable in the blog post.
