# Hands-On Addition and Subtraction Matching Activity

## Hands-on Addition and Subtraction Matching Activity – Kindergarten Winter Math Center

Once learners become familiar with the concepts of counting and number sense, they can then start to tackle the concept of addition and subtraction. Once learners are familiar with their concepts of addition and subtraction they can proceed to firm up their addition and subtraction facts.

I do not encourage rote memorization of facts at any point because this does not help the learners with the concept at all. Math can be taught visually and in a very engaging manner with the use of manipulatives. Especially more so for concepts such as addition and subtraction which can very easily be taught using hands-on manipulatives.

First practice the concept of addition and subtraction with hands-on activities and the use of manipulatives such as snap cubes or counting bears. Once they are very familiar with the concept of addition and subtraction learners are then ready to start tackling facts and work their way through the math equations.

## Using the Snowman Addition and Subtraction Facts Matching Printable Activity

Present your learners with the snowballs and the snowman heads. Learners will solve the math equations in the snowballs and match it to the matching number on the snowman head. In this way they will slowly build up the snowman’s body by solving the equations and placing snowballs under the head. Once done, they can then add the hands to complete their snowman. And just like that they have built a snowman of addition and subtraction facts! What a fun math activity for a winter center!

Students can also record their equations on the recording sheets included for accountability.

If your learners are not familiar with their addition and subtraction facts they can solve the equations using manipulatives. This will allow them to further strengthen their concept of addition and subtraction.

This activity allows for so much differentiation with your learners. Some of the ideas are listed below, but you can implement it however it suits your learners.

• Use only addition or subtraction equations depending on what concept your learners are learning.
• Focus on a few numbers. You can increase or decrease the numbers used for easy differentiation.
• Choose the number of snowballs you want to use. You can opt to use all 5 snowballs at once, or just one to prevent overwhelming your learners.

And its really up to you. There are so many options for differentiation with this activity.

For example, you might focus on 0-5 and combine addition and subtraction cards. Or only choose numbers 6 to 10 and choose 2 addition equations for each number for your student to work on. Since no matter how you differentiate this activity your learner will still be building a snowman with their math equations and that’s all that matters! So have fun building the math snowmen!
