Before learners start to write, they need to develop their fine motor skills. This allows them to strengthen the muscles in their fingers which allows them to hold and grip the pencil properly for writing. Fine motor skills also help them with various other skills such as buttoning, tying their laces, zipping, eating, cutting and so on. 

There are several fun activities that can be done to improve their fine motor skills. These Winter Fine Motor Mats are a simple way to train those fine motor skills. It is a simple, low-prep activity but provides tons of fun and hands-on practice for your little learners.

To Prep:

Simple print the pages and laminate if desired. I normally slip the pages into a dry erase pocket so I don’t have to laminate the pages. It also makes it easy to just slip the pages and change the pages out whenever I want.

What is in the Winter Fine Motor Mats?

The printable contains 10 pages of fine motor mats! The printable includes the following images for learners to build using popsicle sticks.

• Hot cocoa
• Penguin
• Snowman
• Pine tree
• Ice skate
• Snowflakes (2 mats)
• Sled
• Mitten
• Polar bear

Additionally each page also contains the word which learners will have to trace over. They will also have to count the number of each color of popsicle sticks that they use and write it down in the space provided. 

Using the Winter Fine Motor Mats – Popsicle Sticks Printable

Present the mats to your learners with the popsicle sticks. If you do not have the exact colors as required by the mats you can substitute it with other colors or use the wooden popsicle sticks instead.  

Learners will first build the image using the popsicle sticks. They will have to place the sticks on the image, which helps to train their finger control and fine motor skills.

They will then count the number of popsicle sticks of each color that they have used and write it down on the spaces provided on the page.

Finally, they will trace the word of the image that they have just built using a dry-erase marker.

These mats are very versatile and you can use them how you deem necessary. These can be included in a kindergarten fine motor center, for early finishers or in morning tubs.
