Color Sorting Mats – Prepping the activity:

You will need:

  • Printer
  • Laminator
  • Velcro Dots
  • Scissors  / Paper cutter

First, print out the sorting mats and sorting cards. Print onto cardstock and laminate for durability. Then, cut apart the sorting mats, as well as the color sorting cards.

If you would like to make the mats more durable and prevent the pieces from sliding around you can consider attaching a velcro dot on the back of each sorting card. You can then attach the other part of the dot onto the sorting mat. This will also make it easier to store the sorting cards right on the mats and help prevent losing any of the pieces.

I personally, keep these mats stored on a binder rings on my shelf with all the sorting cards attached on the sorting mats.

What is in the printable:

The printable contains the mats for the following 11 colors:

  • Blue
  • Black
  • Brown
  • Grey
  • Yellow
  • Red
  • Pink
  • Green
  • Purple
  • White
  • Orange

There are a total of 11 sorting mats, as well as 6 sorting cards for each color, making a total of 66 color cards.

Using the printable:

Keep the sorting mats in one pile. Keep the sorting cards in one pile.

To play, students will simply pick up one the sorting cards and then place it on the sorting mat of the matching color. The activity is relatively straightforward. This activity aims to both develop a child’s puzzle solving skills as well as sorting and identifying colours. Your preschoolers and kindergarteners are sure to have a blast with this color sorting activity.

If your learners are just getting used to identifying their colors, introduce only one or two mats at a time to prevent overwhelming the learners. Do not present all the mats at once.

Once the learners get more familiar with their colors and are able to recognize their colors with ease, more mats can be introduced. The learner will finally be able to tackle all the 11 mats at once. We had so much fun with this activity and I hope your learner will too.

This is a great game that can be used multiple times throughout the school year as an independent station once students are comfortable playing it themselves.
